Advocacy Centre for Tenants Ontario

The Advocacy Centre for Tenants Ontario (ACTO) is a specialty community legal clinic with a provincial mandate to advance and protect the interests of low-income tenants. We specialize in housing issues related to tenants in Ontario.

As we grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the most important steps we must take is to ensure that everyone remains housed. Stable housing is critical at allowing our health system to remain functional.

Many tenants in Ontario are anxious about losing their home. The loss of income is a serious risk for renters during this epidemic. Half of renters in Ontario make less than $40,000 a year and can lose their home if they experience a minor disruption in their income stream.  Evicting tenants into homelessness is cruel and has serious public health consequences. The last thing we need is more people going to hospital emergency rooms, living in encampments, entering emergency shelters that are already at full capacity, or couch-surfing.
